Ukraine's mineral resources are rich in uranium, manganese, iron ore, and other minerals.
Ukraine is home to about 5% of the world’s total mineral reserves.
A renowned Ukrainian geologist, Doctor of Geological and Mineralogical Sciences, academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Higher Education Institutions of Ukraine, and professor in the Department of Fundamental and Applied Geology at the Faculty of Geology, Geography, Recreation, and Tourism of V. Karazin Kharkiv National University, Vasyl Suyarko, in an interview with the publication “Dumka.”
He emphasized that, as of now, Ukraine is one of the world’s leading mineral-resource-rich countries.
“At the beginning of the 21st century, Ukraine—which accounts for just 0.4% of the world’s landmass—had up to 5% of the world’s total mineral-resource potential in its subsoil. In other words, our main wealth lies in mineral resources—not even the black soil, not even technology. What can give Ukraine a head start is its mineral resources,” said Suyarko.
According to his data, over 20,000 deposits and ore occurrences of 117 types of mineral resources have been discovered in Ukraine. “These are enormous figures! Of these, approximately 8,700 are of industrial significance and are accounted for by the State Commission on Reserves of Ukraine, which records all geological discoveries in the subsoil, all deposits and occurrences, and where permits for mineral extraction are issued. Because, according to the Constitution, the subsoil belongs to the state and the people. And the state grants permits for the extraction of mineral resources,” the geologist noted.
The researcher assured that Ukraine leads not only European countries but also the United States, Russia, the United Kingdom, France, Canada, and other nations in terms of many mineral resources.
"In other words, we are a country rich in natural resources. In terms of iron ore reserves and production, for example, we account for 4% of the world’s total. We hold 10% of the world’s manganese ore reserves. These are enormous figures. And then there’s graphite—which is rarely discussed or mentioned—but 4% of the world’s graphite reserves are here. Uranium. Ukraine is rich in uranium. Zhovti Vody, Dnipropetrovsk Oblast,” Suyarko emphasized.
