The government is launching a large-scale program with investments, construction of plants and export to the EU.
The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine has approved a long-term program for the development of biomethane production until 2035. The document provides for attracting investments, launching new enterprises and gradual integration into the European energy market. The development of biomethane opens up prospects for the country to become a prominent player in the biogas market and strengthen its position in Europe. It is expected that this direction will also help the EU reduce its dependence on Russian energy resources.
In addition, the initiative should increase Ukraine's energy sustainability and stimulate the development of renewable energy through investments.
The program provides for:
- construction of new biomethane plants;
- modernization of existing biogas capacities;
- simplification of conditions for business, including connection to gas infrastructure.
The government has set clear guidelines:
by 2030 - to increase production to 1 billion cubic meters per year;
by 2035 - to increase the volume to 2.1 billion cubic meters.
At the first stage, it is planned to launch eight new enterprises and form a full-fledged regulatory framework for the industry.
It is reported that in the near future Ukraine intends to gain access to European databases of renewable fuels, as well as initiate an agreement with the European Union on mutual recognition of guarantees of origin of biomethane.
In addition, it is planned to introduce gas quality standards, which will create conditions for full-fledged exports and allow Ukraine to integrate into the EU energy market.
In general, the program is considered one of the key steps towards reducing dependence on imported energy resources and developing its own "green" production.
