Chinese automakers are overtaking once-invincible Japanese rivals

Japanese automakers are losing ground in the global market due to the rise of Chinese competitors, which dominate China and are actively capturing Southeast Asia. From 2019 to 2024, the share of Japanese brands such as Toyota, Honda and Mitsubishi has significantly decreased in China, Thailand, Singapore and Indonesia.

Chinese electric cars are displacing Japanese cars even in regions where their positions previously seemed unshakable. Japanese brands are lagging behind in the transition to electric transport, which poses a threat to their future.

Toyota holds  some market segments due to local production, but to regain leadership, Japanese companies are investing in new technologies: software, solid-state batteries and innovative solutions.
