The EU as a new hub for Ukrainian scrap metal: why it is important for the country's economy

After the lull in 2022, Ukrainian scrap metal exports experienced a real "boom". According to the results of 2024, export volumes increased by 60% compared to the previous year, reaching almost 293 thousand tons. This indicates an active recovery of the scrap metal market, which became possible due to the shift in emphasis on deliveries to EU countries, which replaced the traditional Turkish market.Poland stands out in particular, where the volume of imports of Ukrainian scrap increased from 160 thousand tons to almost 250 thousand tons in one year. This helped Polish metallurgists, who, after a decrease in production, again increased steel smelting by more than 10%. Thus, Poland has become a new important partner for Ukrainian exporters, after Turkey, previously the main buyer, stopped direct deliveries. Now Poland is actively supplying scrap to Turkey, while exports of Polish scrap metal to Turkey have more than doubled in the past two years. This development comes against the backdrop of significant changes in the industry. After the duty on scrap metal exports was raised in Ukraine in 2021 to support metallurgical enterprises, the war changed the situation. Numerous plants were occupied, and the market was forced to adapt to new realities. Now Ukrainian metallurgy is gradually recovering, and new markets, in particular Europe, are becoming the main consumers of Ukrainian scrap metal. This is an important step towards Ukraine's integration into the European economy, which provides additional opportunities for the development and stabilization of the country's economy in the face of constant challenges.
