Ukraine launches mechanism for state registration of GMOs: first step towards European standards

The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine has approved a resolution establishing a clear procedure for state registration of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) that can be used in agriculture, science and industry. The document was developed by the Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine and published on May 22.

This initiative is an important component of the adaptation of Ukrainian legislation to the norms of the European Union within the framework of the implementation of the Law of Ukraine “On State Regulation of Genetic Engineering Activities”.What the new resolution provides for:introduction of a clear mechanism for registration and re-registration of GMOs; the possibility of suspending registration in case of violations or the emergence of new circumstances;the procedure for considering objections to submitted applications;establishing requirements for the form and content of registration applications.The resolution will enter into force on September 16, 2026, giving businesses, scientific institutions and government agencies more than a year to prepare for the new rules.“This is not just a technical regulation, but an important step towards Ukraine’s European integration.

The creation of a transparent, controlled system for the circulation of GMOs meets EU standards and opens up new opportunities for trade, investment in biotechnology and improved environmental control,” the Government stressed.The adoption of the resolution strengthens Ukraine’s position on the European market, promotes innovation and increases the environmental safety of the use of modern biotechnology.
