Agriculture consumes almost a third of EU water resources – how the approach to water use is changing in the face of climate challenges

Europe is facing increasingly serious water shortage problems, and the agricultural sector has found itself at the center of the discussion. According to official data, agriculture consumes 29% of all water resources in the European Union every year – it is the second largest water-consuming sector after energy (36%).This was discussed during the panel discussion “Blue Gold: How Water Shapes Our Future in the Face of Climate Change”, which took place on May 14 as part of the 10th Impact’25 Congress in Poznań. It was attended by Urszula Zielinski, Deputy Minister of Climate and Environment of Poland.According to her, despite a 19% reduction in total water withdrawal over the past 20 years, more than 98% of all water in the EU is currently used by just four sectors: energy, agriculture, utilities (19%) and industry (14%). At the same time, water reuse still remains at a low level - only 0.3%.The experience of Cyprus and Malta, which reuse more than 90% and 60% of wastewater, respectively, is indicative. But in general, about 30% of the land area in the EU suffers from seasonal water shortages every year.
