In May 2026, Ukraine’s steel mills significantly increased production of their main product lines. The largest increase was recorded in steel production, which rose by 21.7% compared to April, reaching 629,400 tons.
This is evidenced by data from the Ukrmetallurgprom association.
Production of commercial rolled metal products for the month rose by 16.7% compared to April and by 2.5% year-over-year, reaching 537,800 tons. At the same time, pig iron output increased by 14.5% over the month to 634,400 tons, although this figure was down 1.6% compared to May of last year.
Despite the positive trend in May, the industry’s results for the first five months of the year remain lower than last year’s. Specifically, in January–May, steelmakers produced 2.87 million tons of steel, which is 6.1% less than during the same period in 2025. Rolled steel production fell by 6.7% to 2.34 million tons, while pig iron output decreased by 0.6% to 2.99 million tons.
The industry continues to operate amid military risks, logistical constraints, and high energy costs. At the same time, the growth in May indicates a gradual recovery in production activity and stabilization of operations at key steel mills.
It is worth noting that in 2025, the Ukrainian steel industry showed mixed results. Production of commercial rolled metal products increased by 4.8% to 6.52 million tons, pig iron output rose by 11.2% to 7.88 million tons, while steel production fell by 2.2% to 7.41 million tons. Despite this, last year’s figures were among the best for the industry since the start of the full-scale war.
