As of July 21, 2026, about 1.8 GW of distributed gas generation has been installed in Ukraine.
This is reported by the Ministry of Energy, based on regional data.
It is noted that the leader in the installation of cogeneration gas plants is Kyiv region, where more than 219 MW have been installed. More than 100 MW of capacity has been installed in Cherkasy (129.3 MW), Dnipropetrovsk (118.2 MW), Volyn (113.6 MW), Ivano-Frankivsk (108.8 MW), Sumy (103.6 MW) and Zakarpattia (100.3 MW) regions.
"Within the framework of the implementation of regional sustainability plans, 388.8 MW of gas generation capacity has been put into operation since March 2026. Construction work is ongoing on 247 installations with a total capacity of 532.2 MW," the report says.
In addition to gas cogeneration, renewable energy capacities continue to be increased in Ukraine, in particular wind (wind power) and solar generation (solar power).
In the first half of 2026 alone, 414.8 MW of wind power plants (70 installations) have been put into operation. The total capacity of installed wind power plants today is 1.115 GW, the largest in the Mykolaiv region (over 400 MW) and Odessa region (over 200 MW).
According to NPC Ukrenergo, the total capacity of solar power plants currently reaches 7.3 GW (5.4 GW producers + 2.25 GW active consumers). The largest number is in the Dnipropetrovsk region (947 MW), Mykolaiv region (782 MW) and Odesa region (515 MW).
In parallel with the increase in generating capacity in Ukraine, energy storage technologies are rapidly developing. Over the past year, the total capacity of energy storage facilities (ESP) has increased more than 300 times - to over 600 MW.
The ministry explained that this is an additional tool for balancing the energy system and using energy produced by “green” generation. Accumulating surplus solar generation during the day, UZE feed it into the grid in the evening or morning during peak consumption periods.
As Ukrinform reported, Ukraine needs about 7 billion euros in investments in the coming years to develop new generation.
According to Vitaliy Zaichenko, Chairman of the Board of Ukrenergo NPC, by 2030, the capacity of energy storage facilities is expected to increase to 1.5 GW, gas-fired shunting generation to 2.2 GW, solar power plants to 10 GW, and wind power plants to 3.6 GW.
