Sweden’s Hybrit successfully completes hydrogen storage pilot project

Project shows feasibility of storing hydrogen for steel production on an industrial scale. Sweden’s Hybrit, a joint venture between steelmaker SSAB, mining company LKAB and energy company Vattenfall, has completed a hydrogen storage pilot project, the company said in a statement to the Swedish Energy Agency. The results show the technical feasibility of storing hydrogen for steel production without fossil fuels on an industrial scale, the company said. The initiative successfully designed and built a 100 m3 hydrogen storage facility using steel-lined rock cavern technology. The completed tests demonstrated that the technology works to support a large hydrogen user. In addition, savings of around 25-40% can be achieved on hydrogen production. The pilot facility has undergone accelerated mechanical testing equivalent to approximately 50 years of operation. The safety, functionality and performance of the facility were demonstrated. The Swedish Energy Agency co-financed 22% of the project, the rest was financed by the Hybrit owner companies.
