The decrease in the price of milk has strengthened the position of domestic cheeses in the domestic market
Ukrainian cheese producers are gradually emerging from a deep crisis, with the fall in raw material prices, the cost of production is decreasing. Domestic cheese producers have felt the decrease in competition from European cheeses, as their imports decreased noticeably in February. Meanwhile, the excessively high price of cheese in Ukraine is hindering normal sales.“The number of promotions has increased significantly. Promotional discounts quite often reach even a quarter of the price. Approximately the share of sales through promotions can be estimated at 60% of all sales. And this is normal, given the current prices and the solvency of the majority of Ukrainians,” the experts emphasized. It is noted that producers are trying to export more cheese, but not everyone succeeds, since export prices are often lower than domestic promotional prices. In February, we still managed to increase external sales (12% more than in January), but sales are not higher than in February 2024.Currently, Ukraine exports 60% of its cheese to Kazakhstan, 24% to Moldova. Azerbaijan, Libya and Bulgaria also buy Ukrainian cheese.Ukraine has slightly reduced its cheese imports. In February 2025, external purchases of hard/semi-hard cheese decreased by a quarter compared to January purchases, but their volume is still 41% higher than in February 2024. The main countries supplying rennet cheese to Ukraine are Poland (39%), the Netherlands (13%), Latvia (10%), Italy (9%) and France (8%).
