Grain from Ukraine is an international humanitarian program launched in 2022. Its goal is to supply Ukrainian food to the most vulnerable countries in Africa, Asia, and the Middle East with financial support from donor countries and in coordination with the UN World Food Program (WFP). The program covers not only grains, but also other food products, including vegetable oil and flour. 15 countries have received food aid under the initiative: Djibouti, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Mauritania, Mozambique, Nigeria, Palestine, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, Tanzania, Yemen, and Zambia.
As of the end of March 2025, the Grain from Ukraine humanitarian initiative has already delivered more than 280,000 tons of food to countries facing acute food crises. Recent deliveries include wheat flour and vegetable oil to regions with high levels of food insecurity.
According to the data, the following were sent:
Mozambique - 415.9 tons of vegetable oil;
Palestine - 553 tons of wheat flour;Syria - 4,400 tons of wheat flour.According to the World Food Programme (WFP), the delivery to Syria will provide food for more than 59,000 Syrians for six months.
The program is funded in rounds. The current, third round, has raised $35.5 million in confirmed funding from 29 donor countries.The next phase of deliveries, with funding of $18.8 million from Canada, Sweden, Portugal and Spain, will be directed to Bangladesh, Chad, Mozambique, Pakistan and Syria.The "Grain from Ukraine" initiative is an example of how a country that itself suffers from Russian aggression is actively countering global food security challenges and remains a reliable partner in the fight against hunger in the most vulnerable regions of the world.
