A trilateral meeting of representatives of Ukraine, Romania and the European Commission was held in the Romanian city of Galati within the framework of the “Paths of Solidarity” initiative. The event was dedicated to strengthening cooperation in the Danube region and coordinating efforts in the field of transport infrastructure development, the Ukrainian Sea Ports Authority (USPA) reports.Ukraine was represented at the meeting by the Head of the USPA, Oleksandr Semirha, and his deputy, Viacheslav Kharkavenko. Romania was represented by the Director General of the Lower Danube Administration, Angela Stela Ivan, and representatives of the Ministry of Transport.
Representatives of the Danube Commission and the European Commission, led by Alan Baron, also joined the discussion.Among the key topics was the improvement of the PRIMUS information platform for more effective data exchange between the port administrations of Ukraine and Romania. Issues of shipping safety and expanding logistics capabilities in the region were also discussed.The parties agreed to initiate the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding, which will become the basis for a long-term partnership in the transport sector.
“Danube ports have become Ukraine’s key logistics gateway to Europe. Therefore, it is extremely important to develop systematic, transparent and technological cooperation with Romanian and European partners today,” Oleksandr Semirga emphasized.The meeting confirmed the common desire to integrate the transport networks of Ukraine and the EU — especially important in the context of a full-scale war and on the path to Ukraine’s membership in the European Union.As a reminder, in January-March 2025, Ukrainian ports processed 23 million tons of cargo.
The largest volumes fall on the ports of Greater Odessa — 20.7 million tons. In April, transshipment reached 6 million tons, including 3.1 million tons of grain and 1 million tons of iron ore.In 2024, Ukrainian ports handled 97.2 million tons of cargo, including 18.5 million tons of ore. Export volumes reached 88.1 million tons, a record high compared to 62 million tons in 2023.
