EU introduces new charging standard: mandatory USB-C will become the norm from 2028

The European Union has adopted new rules for the unification of chargers. From December 14, 2028, most chargers with a power of up to 100 W must comply with a single standard and be equipped with a USB Type-C port. This is reported by Glavkom with reference to the Official Journal of the EU.

According to the regulation, all adapters up to 100 W must support universal compatibility and will have a special Common Charger marking, which will confirm the possibility of using one charger for different types of equipment.

A wide range of electronics fall under the new requirements, including:

external power supplies for wireless charging;

chargers for general-purpose batteries;routers and modems;

game consoles;power supplies for monitors and parts of consoles that are connected via an external converter, and not directly to the 220 V network.

The introduction of the new standard continues the EU's policy of harmonizing ports and reducing electronic waste. Previously, the union had already obliged all smartphones and tablets sold in Europe to switch to USB-C from December 2024. Laptops must support this standard by April 2026.Amidst changes in the market in Europe, a number of large manufacturers are reviewing their own strategies. In particular, Lenovo and Xiaomi are preparing to raise prices for smartphones, tablets and laptops due to global shortages and rising prices for memory chips caused by growing demand for artificial intelligence technologies.Meanwhile, Apple has changed the release schedule for new iPhone models: the basic versions of the iPhone 18 may appear in the spring of 2027, while the flagship models iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max are expected in the fall of 2026.
