Starlink Direct to Cell: how satellite communication is changing the way Ukrainian businesses work

Ukraine has become the first country in Europe where Starlink Direct to Cell testing has become available to 4G subscribers. Kyivstar is developing the technology together with Starlink to provide connectivity where a regular mobile network is unavailable or damaged.

The main feature of the technology is that a smartphone does not need a separate satellite antenna. A regular 4G phone can connect directly to a satellite when there is no terrestrial network nearby.

For business, this is especially important in areas where work takes place far from cities. These include agricultural enterprises, geodetic companies, the mining industry and other enterprises with remote facilities.

For example, a satellite channel can be used to transmit RTK corrections - data necessary for high-precision positioning of equipment. This is relevant for modern agricultural machinery, geodetic equipment and other systems that require accurate coordinates.

Thus, Starlink Direct to Cell can become a backup communication channel for companies, allowing them to continue working even in areas with problematic mobile coverage.

For Ukrainian businesses, this means less dependence on terrestrial infrastructure and more opportunities to work in remote regions.
