Ukraine is moving to the final stage of opening the European Union market for biomethane exports.
According to the press service of the Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food, after technical and regulatory decisions are approved by the European Commission, Ukrainian producers will be able to fully supply biomethane to EU countries.
“This will open up new export opportunities for the agricultural sector, promote the development of bioenergy, increase the production of products with high added value, and strengthen Ukraine’s positions in the European renewable energy market,” the ministry emphasized.
And they added that in order to start large-scale exports, it is necessary to complete the harmonization of Ukrainian legislation with EU requirements, ensure mutual recognition of guarantees of origin of biomethane, and fulfill European sustainability criteria.
“The development of bioenergy and the launch of full-fledged exports of Ukrainian biomethane to the EU are one of our strategic priorities. We are taking a responsible path of harmonizing technical and legal norms with European partners. Our goal is to work with the European Commission to develop a clear action plan that will remove regulatory barriers and open the European market for Ukrainian agricultural producers. At the same time, it is important that internal mechanisms, in particular the national biomethane register, work effectively in parallel,” stressed the Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine Taras Vysotsky.
Ukraine is improving its legislation to integrate into the Union Database (UDB), a single EU electronic database that ensures traceability of the entire supply chain of biofuels and renewable gases. Registration in the system is mandatory when exporting to the EU, for example, to Germany. This will simplify the procedures for verifying certificates until full integration with the European system.
