The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has published “Plant-based foods and food ingredients — Definitions and technical criteria for labeling and claims,” the first global standard developed to govern voluntary corporate labeling policies. Until now, there has been no global guidance on how the food industry should use the “plant-based” claim on labels. Products containing animal-based ingredients are sometimes labeled as “plant-based,” which can be misleading to consumers.
Consumer research shows that “plant-based” is one of the most appealing claims for products that do not contain animal-based ingredients. And the number of consumers worldwide is growing. “The ISO standard provides clear guidance to manufacturers and retailers around the world on how to maintain and promote the ‘plant-based’ claim as a claim that is widely trusted and valued by consumers,” says Martine van Haperen, food and catering expert at ProVeg International. With the advent of the ISO standards, she says, sustainability-focused NGOs and organizations representing vegan and vegetarian consumers can refer to the standard to support claims about packaging transparency. Compliance with the ISO standards is voluntary, so organizations like ProVeg will closely monitor how the industry implements them.
